Llandrillo-yn-Rhos Venture Scouts (3rd Rhos-on-Sea scout Group) - 4 Venture Scouts (16 year olds) and their Leader walked the 14 3000-foot mountains in Snowdonia on June 21st 1969.

David Jones (16), Arwel-Edwards Hughes (16) Neil Belford (16) Keith Roobottom (16) and Tony Dixon (Leader 40) left the Pen-y-Pass car park at 2.30am and via the Pyg track walked to the summit of Snowdon to start their attempt at walking the 14 3000's within 24 hours. At dawn they set off David Jones leading the Snowdon range of Crib-y-Ddysgl (3,493), Crib Goch (3,923), down the scree to the Llanberis Pass and onto Nant Peris for a 15 minute breakfast stop provided by Robina Griffith and Sian Jones (school friends of the Venture Scouts). By this time the sun was up and warm. the order of the day was shorts only one place to change (each hid behind a tomb stone, the inmates didn't mind).

Breakfast over, Neil Belford took over leading on the Glyder range. On to the summit of Elider Fach (3,030), Y Garn (3,101), Glyder Fawr (3,279), Glyder Fach (3,262), Tryfan (3,010) and down the scree to the Manchester Hut by the A5. A 15 minute stop for a hot lunch and to the final range the Carnedd led by Arwel Edwards Hughes and Keith Roobottom. On the way up Pen-yr-Ole Wen (3,211) the group burst into song I was born under a wandering star from Paint your Wagon. It did the trick and got us to the summit and all together we said we will make the 14 3000's. Next onto Carnedd Dafydd (3,270), Carnedd Llewelyn (3,485) Yr Elen (3,152), Foel Grach (3,196) and Foel Fras (3,092).  Completed in 19 hours, a magnificent achievement. The main object was to satisfy ourselves that we can do the 14 peaks and survive, although it helped the Venture Scouts to gain the highest scout award the Queen's scout badge.

We were covered by a BBC Wales news team who filmed us coming off Tryfan. Time has moved on now and it can be reported that all are still alive and hill walking and the Venture Scouts of the time are not far off collecting their free bus pass.
